The Resistant Act of Remembrance

A few days ago, the anniversary of Aaron Bushnell’s death passed. I might have forgotten what happened on February 25th a year ago, had it not been amplified by organizers on social media. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t hard to wrap my head around—or that I have a solid understanding of the ancient practice of self-immolation or its relationship to acts of resistance embodied in people like Mohamed Bouazizi, who catalyzed the Arab Spring

I know only that, with the exception of a few independent news sources, Aaron Bushnell is not someone that Western mainstream media wants us to remember. Instead, the West offers words like cult-like behavior and mental illness—even as it remains complicit in mass atrocities.

In an effort to remember Aaron, here are three articles offering different perspectives on his life:

1) a piece from Mondoweiss

2) an article from CounterPunch

3) a reflection from the University of Chicago School of Divinity
